Nitrous Oxide "Laughing Gas"

If you are scared about going to the dentist, we want to help! We offer laughing gas as a sedative during any procedure from a routine cleaning to a tooth extraction. Fear or anxiety about going to the dentist is much more common than you think. If you believe you are the only one who suffers from dental phobia, know that you are not alone. Millions of Americans endure great stress when going to the dentist, and others simply will not go at all.

Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, has been used as a sedative since 1844. It was first used for a tooth extraction and is still being used by dentists over 170 years later. As technology has advanced, we have been able to perfect the way it is delivered. We now have machines that mix nitrous oxide with oxygen to deliver a precise dose for each patient.

Laughing gas is used in both dentistry and oral surgery as an anesthetic and an analgesic. An anesthetic helps your mind and muscles relax, but not to the point of unconsciousness. Analgesic simply means it works as a painkiller as well. In the cases of more painful/less routine procedures, it may be used in combination with a local anesthetic to numb your mouth.

Don’t worry—laughing gas won’t cause you to start giggling during your dental exam. It earned this nickname because of its euphoric effects. In other words, you may feel extreme joy, happiness, and a high sense of well-being. Most importantly, it will help ease your fears and anxieties.

Oral Sedation

Are you terrified of going to the dentist? Have you been avoiding having your teeth cleaned because of fear or anxiety? You are not alone. Millions of Americans suffer from the same fears and anxieties. Fortunately, we offer ways to help you relax and feel comfortable with going to the dentist. One of these is through the administration of oral sedation.

Oral sedation is taken in the form of a prescription pill, usually around an hour before your scheduled appointment. After taking the pill, you will feel relaxed and sleepy. Oral sedation won’t put you to sleep, so you’ll be conscious and able to respond to your dentist during your procedure.

After your appointment, you will probably feel a little disoriented and may not even remember the procedure. You should not drive to and from the dentist, so be prepared to make transportation arrangements. The effects may take up to 24 hours to wear off, depending on your dosage.

Dental patients have been choosing oral sedation for over 50 years for a number of reasons. These include the following:

• It is easy to administer, as you only have to take a pill.

• It is very effective.

• There are no needles involved (a fear of needles and a fear of the dentist often go hand-in-hand).

• It costs less than other forms of sedation.

If you have anxiety or fear about going to the dentist, ask us about oral sedation before your next appointment! Contact us to schedule an appointment at Dental Innovations.
